It’s haying time!


While we often tally the economic contribution of cattlemen based on beef sales, the cow-calf producer is also linked to another vital segment of Washington’s economy: hay production. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Washington is number 3 in the nation for revenues from hay sales and generates over $683 million in hay sales annually.

In addition to turning cows out to utilize fresh forage in the summer, our producers are often very involved in the hay business; whether cutting and baling their own hay or purchasing hay from others. In this way, cattle benefit from a natural food source year-round and make the most of this resource.
